Grant's StoryHE THOUGHT HIS BEST YEARS OF MOVEMENT WERE BEHIND HIM.
After a lifetime of being active, Grant began noticing something that was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
His body wasn't moving like it used to.
In his younger years, Grant had always enjoyed sport and an active lifestyle but by his mid twenties, life had taken a different direction. With four children to raise, family responsibilities took priority and sport gradually fell by the wayside.
Then, as he reached 50, things began to change. His mobility was deteriorating and activities he'd managed comfortably just a year or two earlier were becoming increasingly difficult. It was frustrating and it was starting to get him down.
Grant's wife began researching ways to help and came across Luke, Grant wasn't exactly enthusiastic about the idea.
He had no interest in visiting what he imagined would be a typical gym with a “Lycra wearing PT."
But he agreed to go along with his wife and that first meeting changed his perspective.
"The minute we met him I knew it was more than just his business, it was his passion."
Grant also had longstanding injuries that were affecting his movement and everyday life, he'd previously been advised by consultants that surgery was the only solution but it wasn't an option he wanted to pursue.
Working with Luke, Grant began a carefully adapted strength training programme focused on improving his movement, building strength around affected areas and working within his individual limitations.
Rather than simply pushing through discomfort, his training was adjusted to what his body could manage.
Two years later, Grant says his mobility is significantly better.
He's been able to continue working and enjoying the activities that matter to him, without having undergone the surgery previously recommended.
For Grant, that has made an enormous difference to his quality of life but Grant's story isn't only about his physical progress.
Over the past two years, Luke has become someone he can turn to beyond their training sessions, someone who's supported him through the challenges that life inevitably brings.
As Grant puts it, Luke has become not just his coach, but his mate and what began as personal training has grown into a friendship between Grant's family and Luke and Aimee's family.
Grant's experience shows why individualised coaching matters, especially when you're managing longstanding injuries or changes in mobility.
Strength training isn't about ignoring your limitations. It's about understanding them, adapting appropriately and working towards what your body can safely achieve.
For Grant, that has meant better mobility, greater confidence in his movement and being able to continue doing the things he enjoys.
And along the way, he's gained something he never expected when he reluctantly agreed to meet a personal trainer: a genuine friendship.
